1878 – 1880: During his sojourn of almost two years in the Borinage and in Mons, Vincent van Gogh ended his career as clergyman, and chose the life of an artist. From Cuesmes, he wrote to his brother Theo of his desire to sketch, and began his studies by copying prints. In Belgium, he soon developed a preference for ideas drawn from the everyday lives of farmers and labourers. Many aspects of these beginnings of his time as artist now appear to us as harbingers of his entire career.

This exhibition project is supported by an academic committee, including the Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam), the City of Mons with a team of experts, the Université libre de Bruxelles and several independent academics.

The Kröller-Müller Museum has promised to loan sixteen works; the Van Gogh Museum is lending over thirty works, plus seven of the artist’s original letters from the Borinage and Brussels. Without giving away too much detail, we can say that some more works have also been promised. It is the first time that an exhibition on this subject has been arranged. The exhibition also provides an opportunity for the people of Mons and the Borinage to play a practical part in this project, with the request to make available precious documents relating to the Van Gogh’s stay at the Borinage: there are without doubt still archive items from arcasse coal mine, press articles on the Van Gogh’s time in Mons, and photos of his living environment, to be found. And lastly, why not the fourth photo of Vincent van Gogh himself?

Special attention is being paid to Van Gogh’s correspondence. Van Gogh wrote letters in French from Wasmes and Cuesmes, which testify to his growth as a person, and put his transformation into an artist on display. It would be particularly exciting to see the return of some of these letters to the Borinage, the region in which they were written.

WHAT ’S NEW IN THE VAN GOGH EXHIBITION?

The houses

During his stay in Mons and in the Borinage, Van Gogh lived in a house in Wasmes for half of the time (January- August 1879) and in a house in Cuesmes (August 1879 - October 1880) for the rest of the time. This latter house is already well known since the magnificent restoration of the site and infrastructure carried out by the City of Mons in 2007. The redevelopment work (2005 - 2007) consisted of the creation of a reception building, an organised route through the exhibition and the complete rehabilitation of the house itself. The City of Colfontaine and generous donors pay a particular attention to the house of Wasmes. They intend a complete rehabilitation.

A cinema event

On Tuesday, 27 September 1955, just 60 years before our exhibition is being held, the great American film maker Vincente Minnelli set up his Cinemascope camera in an alley in Wasmes, a stone’s throw from the Grand Hornu. He was in fact attempting to capture Vincent Van Gogh’s Lust for Life on screen and, something quite rare at the time in American cinema, chose to film in the actual locations where the painter had developed his art 75 years earlier. This film was particularly close to the main actor Kirk Douglas’ heart, who chose personally to develop this subject. 60 years on, at the initiative of Philippe Reynaert, Mons 2015 is going to develop a transmedia production that will enable us to relive the eight days of filming during which Vincente Minnelli and Kirk Douglas brought Vincent Van Gogh to the Borinage!

• Call for witnesses!

At the time of the shooting of Vincent van Gogh’s Lust for Life, many inhabitants of the mining villages were engaged as extras in the film. Some were children at the time and are perhaps even still among us! Others have departed but may have left memories of this incredible episode for their children and grandchildren. In addition many people attended the filming for professional reasons or through simple curiosity. André Huet of the asbl “Mémoires Inédites” (Unpublished Memories) told us about a short film made at the time by an amateur, Marcel Honorez. There must be other films, other photos or other traces of the presence of Kirk Douglas and Vincente Minnelli in our region! 1878 - 1888: c'est au cours de ce séjour de presque deux ans au Borinage et à Mons que Vincent van Gogh passa d'une carrière de prédicateur à celle d'artiste. Dans ses lettres de Cuesmes à son frère Théo, il explique clairement la naissance de son envie de dessiner et esquisse ses premiers croquis en copiant des illustrations. En Belgique, il développe bien vite une préférence pour les motifs de la vie quotidienne des paysans et des ouvriers. Nombreux sont les aspects des débuts de l'artiste qui résonneront comme un écho tout au long de sa carrière.

Un comité scientifique associant le musée Van Gogh (Amsterdam), la Ville de Mons, des équipes d'experts, l'Université Libre de Bruxelles ainsi que d'autres chercheurs indépendant soutient le projet d'exposition.

Le musée Kröller-Müller s'est déjà engagé fermement sur le prêt de seize oeuvres, tandis que le musée Van Gogh a clairement confirmé sa généreuse contribution en prêtant plus de trente oeuvres et sept lettres originales du Borinage et de Bruxelles de l'artiste. Sans entrer dans les détails, plusieurs autres prêts ont été promis et nous sommes en mesure d'annoncer une exposition inédite sur ce thème.

Celle-ci sera aussi l'occasion d'associer concrètement la population de Mons et du Borinage à ce projet par un appel aux documents précieux liés au passage de Van Gogh dans le Borinage: archives du charbonnage Marcasse, articles de presse sur le passage de Van Gogh à Mons, photographies de Vincent van Gogh lui-même?

Une importance particulière sera donnée à la correspondance de Van Gogh. Des lettres décisives sur la vocation de Van Gogh ont été écrites en français à Wasmes et à Cuesmes, témoignages de sa croissance en tant qu'homme et de sa conversion au métier d'artiste. Ce sera une émotion particulière de voir revenir certaines de ces lettres sur les terres du Borinage, là où elles ont été rédigées.

Du neuf autour de l'exposition Van Gogh!

Les maisons

Van Gogh a vécu son séjour à Mons et au Borinage pour moitié dans une maison de Wasmes (janvier - août 1879), pour l'autre dans une maison de Cuesmes (août 1879 - octobre 1880). Cette dernière est déjà bien connue depuis la restauration magnifique du site et des infrastructures qu'en a réalisé la Ville de Mons en 2007. Les travaux de réaménagement (2005 - 2007) ont consisté en la création d'un pavillon d'accueil, d'un parcours scénographié et de la réhabilitation complète de la maison proprement dite.

La maison de Wasmes fait l'objet de l'attention particulière de la Commune de Colfontaine et de généreux donateurs pour une réhabilitation complète.

Une manifestation cinématographique

Le mardi 27 septembre 1955, tout juste 60 ans avant que ne se tienne notre exposition, le grand cinéaste américain Vincente Minnelli plantait sa caméra Cinémascope dans une ruelle de Wasmes, à deux pas du Grand-Hornu. Il avait en effet entrepris de porter à l'écran La Vie Passionnée de Vincent van Gogh et, fait rare pour l'époque dans le cinéma américain, choisi de tourner dans les décors réels qui avaient vu évoluer le peintre quelques 75 ans plus tôt. Ce film tenait particulièrement à coeur à son interprète principal, Kirk Douglas, qui avait choisi de développer sous l'impulsion de Philippe Reynaert un dispositif transmedia qui permettra de revivre les huit jours de tournage pendant lesquels Vincente Minelli et Kirk Douglas ont ramené Vincent van Gogh au Borinage.

• Appel à témoins

A l'époque du tournage de La Vie Passionnée de Vincent van Gogh, de nombreux habitants des corons ont été engagés comme figurants dans le film. Certains étaient enfants à l'époque et sont peut-être encore parmi nous! D'autres s'en sont allés mais ont laissé à leurs enfants et petits-enfants des souvenirs de cet épisode incroyable. De nombreuses personnes se sont en outre rendues sur le tournage pour des raisons professionnelles ou par simple curiosité. André Huet de l'asbl "Mémoires Inédites" nous a signalé un petit film tourné à l'époque par un amateur, Marcel Honorez. Il doit exister d'autres films, d'autres photos, d'autres traces de la présence de Kirk Douglas et Vincente Minnelli dans notre région! 1878 – 1880: Tijdens zijn verblijf van bijna twee jaar in de Borinage en in Mons beëindigde Vincent van Gogh zijn carrière als predikant en koos hij voor het kunstenaarsbestaan. Vanuit Cuesmes schreef hij aan zijn broer Theo over zijn verlangen om te tekenen en begon hij met het kopiëren van prenten. Hij ontwikkelde in België al snel een voorliefde voor motieven uit het alledaagse leven van boeren en arbeiders. Veel aspecten uit de begintijd van de kunstenaar klinken als echo’s door in zijn hele carrière.

Dit expositieproject wordt ondersteund door een wetenschappelijk comité waaraan het Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam), de stad Mons met een team van deskundigen, de Université Libre de Bruxelles en enkele onafhankelijke wetenschappers deelnemen.

Het Kröller-Müller Museum heeft de uitleen van zestien werken toegezegd, het Van Gogh Museum van meer dan dertig werken en bovendien van zeven originele brieven van de kunstenaar uit de Borinage en Brussel. Zonder verder in detail te treden, kunnen wij zeggen dat enkele andere werken eveneens reeds zijn toegezegd. Het is voor het eerst dat er een expositie over dit thema wordt georganiseerd. Deze tentoonstelling vormt mede een goede gelegenheid om de bevolking van Mons en de Borinage concreet te laten deelnemen aan dit project met een oproep naar waardevolle documenten die betrekking hebben op Van Goghs verblijf in de Borinage: archiefstukken van de kolenmijn Marcasse, persartikelen over het verblijf van Van Gogh in Mons en foto’s van zijn leefomgeving moeten zeker nog te vinden zijn. En tot slot, waarom niet, de vierde foto van Vincent van Gogh zelf?

Er wordt in het bijzonder aandacht besteed aan Van Goghs correspondentie. Vanuit Wasmes en Cuesmes schreef Van Gogh in het Frans en Nederlands brieven die niet alleen getuigen van zijn menselijke ontwikkeling, maar die ook zijn bekering tot het kunstenaarschap laten zien. Sommige van deze brieven zien we met ontroering terugkomen naar de Borinage, waar ze ooit werden geschreven.

NIEUWE INFORMATIE ROND DE VAN GOGHTENTOONSTELLING

De huizen

Tijdens zijn verblijf in Mons en de Borinage leefde Van Gogh eerst in Wasmes (januari – augustus 1879) en daarna in Cuesmes (augustus 1879 – oktober 1880). Het huis in Cuesmes geniet al enige jaren bekendheid vanwege de prachtige restauratie en ombouw tot museumsite die in 2007 door de stad Mons werden gerealiseerd (2005-2007). De herinrichtingswerkzaamheden omvatten het creëren van een ontvangstpaviljoen, een parcours met scenografie en de volledige renovatie van het huis zelf. Het huis van Wasmes heeft de bijzondere aandacht van de gemeente Colfontaine en diverse genereuze schenkers teneinde het volledig te restaureren.

Een cinematografische manifestatie

Precies 60 jaar voorafgaand aan de expositie in Mons zette de beroemde Amerikaanse filmmaker Vincente Minnelli op dinsdag 27 september 1955 zijn Cinémascope camera neer in een steegje van Wasmes, vlakbij Hornu. Minelli draaide de film Het leven van Vincent van Gogh – naar het boek Lust for Life van Irving Stone – zoveel mogelijk op originele locaties, wat in die tijd een zeldzaamheid was voor de Amerikaanse filmkunst. De hoofdrolspeler, Kirk Douglas, was bijzonder gehecht aan deze film en had zich verregaand in het onderwerp verdiept. 60 jaar later kunnen bezoekers door middel van transmedia storytelling de acht dagen lange filmopnames herbeleven waarmee Vincente Minnelli en Kirk Douglas Vincent van Gogh in de Borinage deden herleven. Dit project wordt gerealiseerd in samenwerking met Philippe Reynaert.

• Getuigenoproep

Tijdens de opnames van Het leven van Vincent van Gogh traden vele mensen uit de omgeving op als figuranten. Sommigen waren toen nog kind en leven wellicht nog. Anderen hebben ongetwijfeld herinneringen nagelaten aan hun kinderen en kleinkinderen. Verder waren er talrijke personen om professionele redenen of puur uit nieuwsgierigheid op de filmset aanwezig. André Huet van de vzw “Mémoires Inédites” bracht een korte film onder onze aandacht die toentertijd door een amateur, Marcel Honorez, werd opgenomen. Ongetwijfeld zijn er nog meer films, foto’s en andere sporen van de aanwezigheid van Kirk Douglas en Vincente Minnelli in onze streek!
