GB - In 1991 I moved from West Flanders to the Borinage in the province of Hainaut, and since 2002 I have worked as a guide in the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Grand-Hornu (www.grand-hornu.eu).

Since 1991 I have been married to Dominique Mailleux. Together we have two daughters, Mathilde and Odile.

FR - En 1991, j'ai quitté la Flandre occidentale pour m'installer dans le Borinage, dans la province du Hainaut. Depuis 2002, je suis guide sur le site  patrimonial mondial de l'UNESCO du Grand-Hornu (www.grand-hornu.eu).

Depuis 1991, je suis marié à Dominique Mailleux. Ensemble nous avons deux filles, Mathilde et Odile.

NL - In 1991 ben ik van West-Vlaanderen verhuisd naar de Borinage in de provincie Henegouwen, en werk sinds 2002 als gids in de UNESCO werelderfgoedsite van de Grand-Hornu (www.grand-hornu.eu).

Sinds 1991 ben ik gehuwd met Dominique Mailleux.  Samen hebben wij twee dochters, Mathilde en Odile.

Contact with Vincent Van Gogh

GB - In the 1990s I accidentally got to know the house in Petit-Wasmes where Vincent Van Gogh had stayed with the family of Jean-Baptiste Denis in 1879. This house was in a very dilapidated state at the time.

FR - Dans les années 1990, j'ai découvert, par hasard, la maison de Petit-Wasmes où Vincent Van Gogh avait séjourné chez la famille de Jean-Baptiste Denis en 1879. Cette maison était dans un état très délabré à l'époque.

NL - In de jaren 1990 leerde ik eerder op toevallige wijze het huis in Petit-Wasmes kennen waar Vincent Van Gogh in 1879 had verbleven bij het gezin van Jean-Baptiste Denis. Dit huis bevond zich destijds in een zeer bouwvallige staat.

GB - In 2010, I decided to organize guided walks in Vincent’s steps  in the Borinage to make the worrying state of this piece of Van Gogh heritage known to a wider audience. Ever since I have had the chance to guide dozens of groups from Belgium and abroad through this former coal mining region.

My blog and the Facebook page "Vincent Van Gogh Borinage Belgium" made it possible to spread the news about the Van Gogh events in the region worldwide.

FR- En 2010, afin de faire connaître l'état inquiétant de ce patrimoine Van Gogh à un public plus large, j'ai décidé d'organiser des promenades guidées sur les pas de Vincent dans le Borinage.  Depuis lors, j'ai déjà fait découvrir cette ancienne région minière à des dizaines de groupes d'ici et d'ailleurs.

Mon blog et la page Facebook "Vincent Van Gogh Borinage Belgium" ont permis de diffuser les informations sur les événements Van Gogh dans la région aux amateurs de Vincent dans le monde entier.

NL - Om de zorgwekkende toestand van dit stukje Van Gogh erfgoed bij een breder publiek bekend te maken, besloot ik in 2010 om geleide wandelingen te organiseren in het spoor van Vincent in de Borinage.  Ondertussen heb ik reeds tientallen groepen uit binnen- en buiteland kennis leren maken met deze voormalige mijnregio.  

Mijn blog en de Facebook-pagina "Vincent Van Gogh Borinage Belgium" maakten het mogelijk om het nieuws over de Van Gogh gebeurtenissen in de regio wereldwijd te verspreiden.

Mons 2015

GB - In 2015, the city of Mons was the European Capital of Culture.  One of the highlights of the year was the exhibition "Vincent Van Gogh - the birth of an artist" at the BAM.

"Mons 2015" ensured that the Van Gogh House in Petit-Wasmes was completely renovated to serve as a visitor centre.

FR - En 2015, la ville de Mons était capitale européenne de la culture. L’exposition "Vincent Van Gogh - La naissance d’un artiste" au BAM a été l’un des temps forts de l’année.

La Fondation "Mons 2015" a veillé à ce que la maison Van Gogh de Petit-Wasmes soit entièrement rénovée pour servir de centre d'interprêtation.

NL - In 2015 was de stad Bergen (Mons) het hele jaar lang Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa.  Eén van de hoogtepunten van het jaar was de tentoonstelling "Vincent Van Gogh - de geboorte van een kunstenaar" in het BAM.

"Mons 2015" heeft ervoor gezorgd dat het Van Gogh Huis in Petit-Wasmes volledig gerenoveerd werd om als bezoekerscentrum te kunnen dienen.

GB - My personal contributions to "Mons 2015" were weekly guided walks following Vincent's track in Petit-Wasmes and guiding dozens of national and foreign journalists as “Welcome Officer”.

FR - Mes contributions personnelles à "Mons 2015" consistaient en des promenades guidées hebdomadaires sur les pas de Vincent à Petit-Wasmes et en guidant, en tant que « Welcome Officer », des dizaines de journalistes nationaux et étrangers .

NL - Mijn persoonlijke bijdragen tot "Mons 2015" waren wekelijkse geleide wandelingen in het spoor van Vincent in Petit-Wasmes en hett begeleiden van tientallen journalisten uit binnen- en buiteland als "Welcome Officer".

GB - In addition, I encouraged some local craftsmen to make some Van Gogh products to present to tourists.

FR - En outre, j'ai encouragé certains artisans locaux à fabriquer des produits Van Gogh à présenter aux touristes.

Marcasse

GB - In April 1879 Vincent Van Gogh descended for 6 hours in the coal mine of Marcasse. Today, the remaining old mining buildings find themselves in an abandoned state.

FR - En avril 1879, Vincent Van Gogh est descendu pendant 6 heures dans le charbonnage de Marcasse. Aujourd'hui, les anciens bâtiments miniers restants se trouvent dans un état de délabrement.

NL - In april 1879 is Vincent Van Gogh gedurende 6 uur afgedaald in de kolenmijn van Marcasse. Vandaag befvinden de resterende oude mijngebouwen zich in een vervallen staat.

GB - In 2015 Carmen Azevedo, Paul Berckmans, Paul Boutsen, Monique Van den Berg and I worked out a Master Plan that outlines a new future for Marcasse as a visitor center around the themes of "Work", "the Industrial Revolution" and "Vincent van Gogh ".

A copy of this Master Plan can be obtained upon simple request.  Investors are very welcome !

FR - En 2015, Carmen Azevedo, Paul Berckmans, Paul Boutsen, Monique Van den Berg et moi-même avons élaboré un Masterplan qui définit un nouvel avenir pour Marcasse en tant que centre de visiteurs sur les thèmes du "Travail", de la "La révolution industrielle" et de "Vincent van Gogh ".

Une copie de ce Masterplan peut être obtenue sur simple demande. Avis aux investisseurs !

NL - In 2015 hebben Carmen Azevedo, Paul Berckmans, Paul Boutsen, Monique Van den Berg en ik een Masterplan uitgewerkt dat een nieuwe toekomst voor Marcasse uitstippelt als bezoekerscentrum rond de thema's van "Werk", "de Industriële Revolutie" en "Vincent van Gogh".

Borigines

GB - After 2015 I decided to continue with the guided walks under the name "Borigines".

 FR - Après 2015, j'ai décidé de poursuivre les promenades guidées en activité complémentaire sous le nom de "Borigines".

NL - Na 2015 besloot ik in bijberoep verder te doen met de geleide wandelingen onder de naam "Borigines".

GB - In addition to guided walks for groupsupon reservation , I plan 3 walks each year that are open to all audiences. One falls around Vincent's date of birth (end of March), a second around his death date (end of July) and a third in the fall.

FR - En plus des promenades guidées pour les groupes sur rendez-vous, chaque année je propose 3 promenades ouvertes à tous les publics. L'une se situe autour de la date de naissance de Vincent (fin mars), une seconde autour de sa date de décès (fin juillet) et une troisième à l'automne.

NL - Naast gelleide wandelingen voor groepen op afspraak, plan ik ieder jaar 3 wandelingen die open staan voor alle publiek. Een daarvan valt rond de geboortedatum van Vincent (eind maart), een tweede rond zijn sterfdatum (eind juli) en een derde in de herfst.

GB - "Marcasse by Candlelight" is a tribute on the occasion of the anniversary of the death date of Vincent Van Gogh. The old mining buildings of Marcasse are immersed in a fairy-like atmosphere by candlelight. In 2019, on Saturday 27 July, lit 129 candles and projected the animated film "Loving Vincent" (2017) on a large screen.  Due to Corona restrictions the 2020 edition had to be candelled, but we hope to organize the event again in July 2021.

  FR - "Marcasse aux Chandelles" est un hommage à l'occasion de l’anniversaire du décès de Vincent Van Gogh. Les anciens bâtiments miniers de Marcasse sont immergés dans une atmosphère féerique à la lueur des bougies.   En 2019, le samedi 27 juillet, , nous avons allumé 129 bougies et projeté le film d'animation "Passion Van Gogh" (2017) sur grand écran.  A cause des restrictions sanitaires Covid-19, l'édition 2020 a dû être annullée, mais nous espérons pouvoir refaire l'événement fin juillet 2021.

NL -  "Marcasse bij Kaarslicht" is een jarlijks eerbetoon ter gelegenheid van de sterfdatum van Vincent Van Gogh.  De oude mijngebouwen van Marcasse worden door kaarslicht ondergedompeld in een sprokjesachtige sfeer.  In 2019 hebben we, op zaterdag 27 juli, 129 kaarsen laten branden en de animatiefilm "Loving Vincent" (2017) op groot scherm geprojecteerd.  Vanwege de corona maatregelen, is de editie van 2020 niet kunnen doorgaan, maar we hopen het event opnieuw te kunnen organiseren eind juli 2021.

Van Gogh sculpture by Anthony D. Padgett

GB- In 2017 the British artist Anthony D. Padgett worked on his project "A year with Vincent Van Gogh". In addition to 67 drawings and paintings, Anthony made a bust after thoroughly analyzing the self-portraits and photos of Vincent and close relatives.

Anthony made seven versions of the original bust, one of which he donated to Borigines. On 17 May 2019 the statue was inaugurated in the hall of the Congres Hotel Van der Valk in Mons.  This specimen has a coal finish that reminds of Vincent's stay in the coal-mining region of the Borinage.

The other six sculptures are in Brixton, Welwyn, Isleworth, Ramsgate, Arles and Nuenen.

FR - En 2017, l'artiste britannique Anthony D. Padgett a travaillé sur son projet "Une année avec Vincent Van Gogh". En plus de 67 dessins et peintures, Anthony a fait un buste après avoir analysé en profondeur les autoportraits et les photos de Vincent et de ses parents proches.

Anthony a réalisé sept copies du buste original, dont l'une a été donnée à Borigines. Le 17 mai 2019, la statue a été inaugurée dans le hall du Congres hôtel Van der Valk à Mons. Cet exemplaire a une finition "charbon" qui rappelle le séjour de Vincent dans la région minière du Borinage.

Les six autres bustes se trouvent à Brixton, Welwyn, Isleworth, Ramsgate, Arles et Nuenen.

Van Gogh mural painting by Morgan Ico

GB – On June 26, 2019 Walter Michael DeForest (New-York) Visited the Busiau School in Petit-Wasmes  during his 79-days journey Van Gogh Find Yourself project  (http://www.waltermichaeldeforest.com/).

Walter was accompanied by Liz Cook, Lenny Hayden and Morgan Ico from London.

While Walter did a workshop with the children in the class of Mrs. Martin Flasse, Morgan took his paint spray cans and created a fantastic mural painting on a wall of the schoolyard.

FR – Le 26 juin  2019, Walter Michael DeForest (New-York) a rendu visite à l’Ecole Busiau à Petit-Wasmes  au cours de son voyage de 79-jours  à travers l'Europe, un projet qu'il avait intitulé « Van Gogh Find Yourself » (http://www.waltermichaeldeforest.com/).

Walter était accompagné par Liz Cook, Lenny Hayden et Morgan Ico de Londres.

Pendant que Walter faisait une animation avec les enfants de la classe de Mme. Martine Flasse, Morgan sortait ses bombes de peinture pour créer une magnifique peinture murale sur un mur de la cour de l’école.

Van Gogh mural by Claudia Mejià

GB - From Monday, July 25 to Sunday, July 31, 2022, Claudia Mejià from El Salvador created a mural on a wall of the old Marcasse coal mine where Vincent descended into the mine to a depth of 700m in April 1879 to determine the conditions in which the miners lived and worked down there.

The title of the artwork is “The man in the depths of the abyss”.  It can be admired in Marcasse from now onwards.

FR - Du lundi 25 au dimanche 31 juillet 2022, Claudia Mejià, du Salvador, a peint une fresque sur un mur de l'ancienne mine de charbon de Marcasse, où Vincent est descendu à 700 mètres de profondeur en avril 1879 pour découvrir les conditions de vie et de travail des mineurs.

L'œuvre d'art a reçu comme titre «  L'homme dans les profondeurs de l'abîme », et peut désormais être admirée à Marcasse.

 NL - Van maandag 25 tot zondag 31 juli 2022 heeft Claudia Mejià uit El Salvador een muurschildering gemaakt op een muur van de oude Marcasse kolenmijn waar Vincent in april 1879 tot 700m diepte in de mijn is afgedaald om vast te stellen in welke omstandigheden de mijnwerkers daar beneden leefden en werkten.

Het kunstwerk kreeg de title « De man in de diepte van de afgrond »

en is vanaf nu in Marcasse te bewonderen.

The Van Gogh bust made by Anthony Padgett moves to the Agrappe in Frameries

GB - Thursday, May 15, 2025 : inauguration of the Van Gogh Bust by Anthony Padgett on the former mining estate of the Agrappe in Frameries.

On April 17, 1879, while Vincent was working in the Borinage as a minister, a dramatic mining disaster occurred at the Agrappe, killing 121 and injuring 11. Vincent arrived on the scene to tend to the wounded with strips of cloth, olive oil and wax.   In October 1888 he wrote from Arles to Eugène Boch that he planned to return to the Borinage the following year to paint, among other things, the Agrappe.  Unfortunately, this never happened.  But thanks to the placement of the bust, his wish is fulfilled.

Many thanks to artist Anthony Padgett for the donation and to the Municipality of Frameries for the installation.

FR - Jeudi 15 mai 2025 : inauguration du buste de Van Gogh par Anthony Padgett à l'ancien domaine minier de l'Agrappe à Frameries.

Alors que Vincent travaillait dans le Borinage en tant que prédicateur en 1879, une dramatique catastrophe minière se produisit à l'Agrappe le 17 avril 1879, faisant 121 morts et 11 blessés. Vincent arrive sur les lieux pour soigner les blessés avec des bandes de tissu, de l'huile d'olive et de la cire.   En octobre 1888, il écrit d'Arles à Eugène Boch qu'il compte retourner dans le Borinage l'année suivante pour peindre, entre autres, l'Agrappe.  Malheureusement, cela ne s'est jamais produit.  Mais grâce à l'emplacement du buste, son vœu sera finalement exaucé.

Un grand merci à l'artiste Anthony Padgett pour le don et à la commune de Frameries pour l'installation.

NL - Donderdag 15 mei 2025 :  inhuldiging van het Van Gogh Borstbeeld van Anthony Padgett op het vroegere mijndomein van de Agrappe in Frameries.

Toen Vincent in 1879 in de Borinage werkte als predikant, gebeurde op 17 april 1879 een dramatische mijnramp in de Agrappe waarbij 121 dodelijke slachtoffers en 11 gewonden vielen. Vincent kwam ter plaatse om de gewonden te verzorgen met repen stof, olijfolie en was.   In oktober 1888 schreef hij vanuit Arles aan Eugène Boch dat hij van plan was om het volgende jaar terug te keren naar de Borinage om er o.a. de Agrappe te schilderen.  Dit is jammergenoeg nooit gebeurd.  Maar dankzij de plaatsing van borstbeeld gaat zijn wens toch een beetje in vervulling.

Hartelijk dank aan kunstenaar Anthony Padgett voor de schenking en aan de Gemeente Frameries voor de installatie.

Lecture about Vincent Van Gogh in the Borinage

GB - After reds some lectures for local  associations in the Borinage, I was invited by Heet Gele Huis in Prinsenhage (Breda, Netherlands) on Saturday, May 15, 2025 for a first lecture abroad.     Quite an honor !

The title of the lecture was “ Vincent Van Gogh in the Borinage : The great turnaround ”.

FR - Après avoir donné quelques conférences pour des associations locales dans le Borinage, j'ai été invité le samedi 15 mai 2025 par Heet Gele Huis à Prinsenhage (Breda, Pays-Bas) pour donner une première conférence à l'étranger.     Quel honneur !

Le titre de la conférence était « Vincent Van Gogh dans le Borinage : le grand retournement ».

NL- Na reds enkele voordrachten te hebben gegeven voor lokale verinigingen in de Borinage, werd ik op zaterdag 15 mei 2025 door Heet Gele Huis in Prinsenhage (Breda, Nederland). Uitgenodigd voor een eerste lezing  in het buitenland.     Een hele eer !

De titel van de lezing was «  Vincent Van Gogh in de Borinage : De grote ommezwaai ».
